As the days grow shorter, Journey Theater continues to shine bright this show season with stories of hope, courage, and renewal. This season reminds us how creativity can shine a light into every corner of life.
The stage is set for an inspiring show season with two productions that the whole family will enjoy. Footloose opens in November with catchy music, dynamic choreography, and a message that bridges generations. December brings the magical and heartfelt Narnia to the stage. Fall class session is wrapping up soon and our students are excited to perform at their showcases. These are special performances where students share what they’ve learned with family and friends. The event is free and provides a glimpse into what Journey Theater classes offer. Details can be found on our event calendar.
This month, we’re shining the spotlight on two new members of our production team who help keep things running behind the scenes. Returning as show coordinator is Fredia Thompson, whose past experience will bring a unique perspective and renewed enthusiasm to her role. Julianne Bodner joins the team as warehouse manager with an extensive experience in set design and props management, providing invaluable insight to her role. We asked each of them a few questions about their work and what inspires them in the world of theater.
Fredia Thompson, Show Coordinator
Having coordinated shows before, how does it feel to return to this position?
It feels like home! I love this community.
Is there a particular aspect of the production and rehearsals that you’re most excited for or maybe secretly love managing?
It’s been ten years since I last was involved in a show! Shadowing Heather Bode this fall I get to see all the changes that have happened during that time. I attended auditions and casting for Narnia and am in awe of the talent and courage of kids as well as the open expression of director’s commenting on the growth they see and the personal relationships they have with auditioneers. I am excited to see the start-to-finish process of a show and all the personal stories that come out of the process.
You’ve seen a lot of show weeks. Are there moments or traditions backstage that always make you smile?
Opening night has always been spectacular for me. It is the culmination of weeks of work from families, students and the artistic team and it never disappoints! Traditions that always make me smile are circle up before each show and the relationships cultivated that are demonstrated at Strike party and beyond.
Outside of theater, what are some things you enjoy doing or creating?
I am on a quest to visit all the National Parks! There are 63 parks, I’ve visited 20. I have a ways to go! I’m also a crafter at heart and love creative projects. I met a personal goal of mine and completed a quilt with a quilting class this summer.
Finish this sentence: “Being part of Journey Theater means…”
Belonging.
Julianne Bodner, Warehouse Manager
What drew you to the role of Warehouse Manager at Journey Theater?
I was drawn to this role because I love the intersection of creativity and organization that comes with managing a theater warehouse. Having worked as a Scenic Designer and Props Coordinator, I know how important it is to have a well-maintained, accessible stock that supports both artistry and efficiency. Journey has such a strong community focus and a commitment to giving students hands-on production experience, which really resonates with me—I love being part of that process behind the scenes.
What does a typical day look like for you as our warehouse manager?
Every day looks a little different! Some days I’m sorting or repairing set pieces, labeling and cataloging inventory, or prepping items for upcoming shows. Other days I’m coordinating drop-offs and pick-ups, organizing the workspace, or helping production teams figure out creative solutions for specific set or prop needs. There’s always something to build, fix, or track down—and I love that mix of hands-on work and logistical problem-solving.
Journey’s productions rely on so many creative elements—what part of that process do you enjoy most?
I love seeing how all the design and technical elements come together to support storytelling. It’s especially rewarding to help students and directors bring their creative ideas to life with the materials we have on hand—sometimes that means thinking outside the box, repurposing something unexpected, or giving a piece a whole new life onstage.
What’s one thing people might not realize about what goes on behind the scenes?
People might not realize just how much planning and teamwork it takes to make a show run smoothly. Every prop, every piece of scenery, and every quick change has been carefully thought through and tested. The magic onstage depends on a lot of invisible work behind the curtain—and it’s incredibly collaborative.
When you’re not organizing or building, what’s something you like to do for fun?
When I’m not in the shop, I love exploring local art and architecture and spending time by the coast. I’m a professional Set Designer, so I’m often designing and painting for shows around Oregon.
