JT101 Journey Troupers Dancing Through Disney (ages 6-7)

Teacher: Annalisa Quarto

Class will be held Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 4:00 - 4:30 pm

It's a zippity doo da day! Come on a dancing adventure! Lets go on a trip to Disneyland together and dance our way through the sounds of Disney! This class is a fun introduction into Journey classes where we will cover the basics of dancing and learn how to interact with music in a theatrical way! We will box step our way over classics like Aladdin, spin through outer space with Buzz Light Year, and jump with Tigger! Adventure is out there! Let's go fly a kite with Mary Poppins and find it!

ANNALISA QUARTO has been a choreographer and dance teacher for Journey Theater Arts Group since 2014. She has a Bachelors of Arts in Music with a focus on musical theater and vocal pedagogy and works as a voice and dance teacher both in and outside of Journey. She is classically trained in ballet, studied tap, jazz, and musical theater styles as well as swing and ballroom dancing. Besides Journey, she loves spending time with her loved ones and her dog, working as a living history interpreter at Fort Vancouver National Historic Site, and dancing her heart out. She is very excited to help each student discover hidden talents and to help them pursue their passions in theater!

DR090 Foundations of Drama (ages 8-16)

Teacher: Thomas Losch

Class will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays 6:00 - 7:15 pm

Explore the building blocks of acting through creative movement, theater games, and scene work. You’ll learn to use your whole body, voice & facial expressions to portray any character you choose!

TOM LOSCH is originally from Williamsport, Pennsylvania. He has a theater degree from Penn State University and has performed in many shows including "Grease," " Brighton Beach Memoirs," "Guys and Dolls," "Much Ado About Nothing" and "Play It Again, Sam". He is excited to be in his fourth session of teaching with Journey Theater Arts Group!

DA090 Foundations of Dance (ages 8-18)

Teacher: Annalisa Quarto

Class will be held Wednesdays, 4:00 - 5:00 pm and Saturdays, 10:00 - 11:00 am

You’ve got dancing fever! Master the basics and you’ll be ready for anything. Whether you want to learn Ballet, Jazz, Lyrical, Modern, Tap, Hip Hop, or Ballroom—this class will give you the foundation you’ll need to succeed. This class focuses on basic ballet and jazz dance and is a required beginning for all our other dance classes.

V090 Foundations of Voice (ages 8-18)

Teacher: Holly Counts

Class will be held Mondays and Thursdays, 4:30 - 5:30 pm

Whether you love to sing in your church choir, along with Rock Band, or just in the shower—singing can be fun! Learn how to put those pipes to use with good technique and style. In this interactive class, you will learn the fundamental concepts and training of the voice and gain the confidence you need to perform solos in showcase and shows. This class is the foundation of all our voice classes!

HOLLY COUNTS has been teaching and directing for Journey Theater since 2011. She loves getting to share her passion for singing and musical theater with her students, and forming relationships with the awesome families who are a part of Journey. In addition to working for Journey, Holly runs the Music Counts Voice and Piano Studio in Hillsboro. She holds an M.M. in Voice from Portland State University and a B.M. in Vocal Music Education from Washington State University.

SP103 Puppet Workshop (ages 8-12)

Teacher: Cole Peterson

Class will be held Wednesdays 6:00 - 7:00 pm, and Saturdays 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

Do you love Sesame Street and the Muppets? Then this is the class for you! Join me as we explore how to build puppets on a budget, using almost entirely what you have around the house. After our characters are constructed, we will learn how bring them to life, testing different voices and movement styles!

Required Materials:
- 1 shoebox
- 2 colors of felt or construction paper (felt preferred) or wrapping paper
- Assorted items from around the house for eyes, ears, and other various features, Exacto knife or scissors, glue or hot glue gun

COLE PETERSON is in his sophomore year at Whitworth University. He is set to graduate with degrees in Secondary Education, Theatre, and History. Cole has been working with puppets for over 6 years, with his experience culminating in a senior project in which he built 5 professional quality puppets and performed a show with them at the Ronald McDonald House. He can’t wait to share his passion for puppets with curious students, and is excited to have some creative fun in these crazy times!

MT400 Online: Lion King Kids (ages 8-13)

Teacher: Alec Martinez, Charlotte Bryan, Maria McClish

Class will be Mondays between 5:30-8:30, Wednesdays between 5:30-8:30, Saturdays between 10-11. Students will have 2+ hours of instruction each week between these hours depending on the role in which they are cast.

The show must go on! Join us for this unique virtual production of Lion King Kids! This production will culminate in a video showcase, complete with scenes and the beloved musical numbers that Lion King is known for. Students will receive live weekly virtual instruction for dance and music, and will be expected to submit weekly audio and video recordings to be used to create our show. Lion King offers three different ensembles, in addition to the named roles that are known and loved. If you are interested in being a part of a community working towards theatrical excellence, and having tons of fun along the way - then this virtual production of "Disney's Lion King Kids" may be for you!

MT201 Auditions & Callbacks (ages 9-12)

Teacher: Shanae Tullis

Class will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7:30 - 8:30 pm

Learn the ins and outs of preparing for auditions so you can feel confident the next time you take the stage! Topics include selecting a song, how to practice to be performance ready, being ready for callbacks, and preparing yourself mentally for the nerves that often come along with auditions. Get ready to rock your next audition!

SHANAE TULLIS started performing on stage at age 5 in a production of "Pinocchio" and knew that she was born to be in the theatre! She has an AA in both Theatre Arts and Technical Theatre and a BA in Theatre with an emphasis in Directing and a minor in Music. Shanae has taught musical theatre at performing art schools and through community programs. Additionally, she teaches private voice lessons and music education. While she loves to direct, Shanae does continue to perform whenever her schedule allows.

V105 Voice of the Villain (ages 8-13) *

Teacher: Larissa Hawk

Pre-Requisite: V090

Class will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7:15 - 8:15 pm

Want to learn how to perform a specific character type? Then this is the class for you! The focus of the class this session is on the characters we all love to hate—villains! Learn to bring mayhem and menace to your singing. You should take this class if you want to play roles like Jafar, Farquad, Prince Hans, Maleficent, or Cruella DeVil.

LARISSA HAWK began participating with Journey in 2007 and has performed in and directed almost 30 shows with Journey since then. Larissa also teaches choir, drama, and music theory at Trinity Academy Portland and Cathedral Park Performing Arts Collective, has directed various choirs, leads music groups for the elderly, and pastors at Grace Christian Fellowship. Her favorite recent musical outlet was singing in an a capella quartet of Christmas carolers at The Grotto.

DA202 Intermediate Tap (ages 9-15) *

Teacher: Grace Thompson

Pre-Requisite: DA102

Class will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:00 - 7:00 pm

You’ve got rhythm and you’ve got music, so now let’s really raise the bar and put them all together in new & creative ways. With the building blocks of Tap under your belt, this class will help you to use them in intermediate tap steps and combination steps. Challenge your muscle memory and increase precision with this course. Tap your way to the Great White Way!

DR202 Intermediate Drama: Monologues (ages 10-18) *

Teacher: Melissa Bareford

Pre-Requisite: DR090

Class will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:00 - 7:00 pm

It's time to put a spotlight on your acting in this ramped up version of our monologues class. We will focus on creating believable, interesting characters while advancing your monologue technique, as well as learning to select and prepare audition pieces that are just right for you and the role you want. But in this online version, we will cover more monologue styles and you will receive more one-on-one coaching than we ever have time for in our in-person class.

MELISSA BAREFORD is a transplant from Chicago where she worked in the professional theatre for over 12 years. She has a B.A., M.A., and Ph.D in theatre and has been teaching and directing with Journey since 2013.

DR305 Advanced Drama: Acting for the Camera (ages 11-18) *

Teacher: Melissa Bareford

Pre-Requisite: DR090; additional Drama recommended

Class will be held Mondays and Wednesdays, 6:00 - 7:00 pm

So you want to be in the movies? This class will fine tune your acting with specific emphasis on skills that are vital to acting on camera: playing subtext, active listening and reacting, acting "in the moment," and making a variety of strong, playable acting choices. In addition, this class will introduce skills specifically related to on-camera work: basic camera technique, location specific eye-lines, eye-line for multiple partners, piggybacks, continuity, physicality for camera, reading a shot list, hitting your mark, and more. Our final project/showcase will be a short film featuring you!

Required supplies: Mobile recording device (mobile phone will work)

DR310 Advanced Drama: Playwriting (ages 12-18) *

Teacher: David Bareford

Pre-Requisite: DR090

Class will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7:15 - 8:15 pm

This class provides aspiring young authors with a basic framework to begin crafting theatrical scripts of their own! Topics include refining a workable premise, setting up a strong central conflict, creating the main character, structuring the story's throughlines, and crafting dialogue that pops off the page. By the end of the session, the students will have written a scene or a short play to launch or continue their writing journey.

DAVID BAREFORD is known around Journey for designing the fights in many shows and teaching stage combat classes, but he is also a playwright with three one-act plays, two mainstage productions and one musical that have seen production. He is excited to bring this class on line to all areas, and hopes to start you down the path of writing for the theatre!

SP100 Physical Performance: Stomp (ages 13-18) *

Teacher: Chelsea Lapp

Pre-Requisite: DA090

Class will be held Mondays and Thursdays, 7:30 - 8:30 pm

Explore rhythm by using everyday objects such as trash cans, brooms, and even your own hands and feet. Stomp will take students on a journey of percussion, characterization and performance. Learn the intricate beats from the show Stomp Out Loud as well as creating your own unique rhythms in this fun, upbeat class!

CHELSEA NICOLE LAPP is an award-winning Choreographer from Southern California. Her work has been seen all over the nation in professional and community theatre, including Journey’s 2019 summer production of "Newsies". Chelsea’s connection with Stomp goes back over 20 years; during that time she has worked personally with Stomp Out Loud performers and even performed with her brother’s Stomp crew around San Diego. Get ready to make some noise!

MT201 Teens Auditions & Callbacks (ages 13-18) *

Teacher: Shanae Tullis

Pre-Requisite: MT100

Class will be held Mondays and Wednesdays, 7:30 - 8:30 pm

Whether it's your first audition or your twentieth, there are always tips, tricks, and techniques you can learn to strengthen your audition. In this class we'll discuss how to choose the right song to showcase your voice, how to pump up your performance at auditions, ways to tackle nerves, and how to make sure you're ready for a callback. Get ready to work hard so your next audition will be your best yet!

DA400 Year Long Dance Intensive (by audition) * CLASS FULL

Teacher: Madeleine Townsend

Pre-Requisite: by audition

Class will be held Mondays and Wednesdays, 7:15 - 8:15 pm

MADELEINE TOWNSEND is a Journey Alumni who has been dancing since the age of 3. She received the majority of her training from Groove Nation Dance Academy, then spent some time at the University of Washington, performing with the UW Hip Hop Student Association and training with renowned choreographers and performers, such as Steven Sofia, Mark Mendonca, and Dani Tirrell. She loves her family (and two cats), Disney, and Jesus, and can't wait to share her passion for hip hop with students this session!
