Vancouver Classes

Registration for Winter session is now closed.  Stay tuned for information regarding our upcoming Spring session!

Journey Theater classes are a great way to introduce young people to different aspects of the theater arts, and help students gain confidence and develop performance skills.


A few things to be aware of

  1. “090 Foundations of…” classes are our CORE CLASSES that serve as prerequisites for continuing on to other classes.
  2. Classes listed with a * have prerequisites.  Please read the class description for details before registering.
  3. If you have a question as to whether you meet the prerequisites for a class you’d like to take, please email the Journey Registrar, Kelly Sauter.
  4. Classes fill quickly, and may fill before this page is updated. Remember to list your second choice class!
  5. Classes and teachers are subject to change, depending on enrollment and availability.
  6. Mask wearing will not be required as of March 12th, 2022.* Please continue to follow best practices for hand-washing and hygeine, and stay home if you have cold-like symptoms or a fever.

Fees and Payment Information

  • Early Registration: $265.00* when you register by December 19, 2022
  • Standard Registration: $280.00*
  • *Additional fees: Some classes require additional fees or purchase of supplies (e.g. make-up kits or shoes).  See class description for details.
  • New Family Discount: Families enrolling a student for the first time are eligible for a discount for $25 off the total cost of registration. Enter the code FIRSTJOURNEY when registering online. This discount is given once per family.

Monday Classes List - Winter - 2023

JT100 Journey Troupers (ages 6-7) CLASS IS FULL

Teacher:

Let your imagination take flight into the world of theater through song, music, and dance. The fun never stops in Troupers and includes theater basics while learning the foundations of performing in a safe, encouraging environment. Let your child take the spotlight! Students enrolled in this class may audition only if they turn 8 by the last day of the session.

DR090 Foundations of Drama (ages 8-18) CLASS IS FULL

Teacher:

Explore the building blocks of acting through creative movement, theater games, and more! You’ll be able to use your whole body, voice & facial expressions to portray any character you choose!

V090 Voice for Teens (ages 12-18) CLASS IS FULL

Teacher: Jay Tatco-Nowak

Learn how to put your voice to use with good technique and style. In this interactive class, students will learn the fundamental concepts and training of the voice, learn proper posture and breathing techniques, phrasing and how to stay on pitch. Students will develop the confidence they need to perform in showcase and at auditions through an encouraging learning environment.

DA090 Foundations of Dance (ages 8-18) CLASS IS FULL

Teacher: Cassidy Watson

1, 2, 3, 4 – Let’s get up and rock the floor! 5, 6, 7, 8 – Point your toes and stand up straight! Step up to the basic techniques that will prepare you to take on any form of dance. Whether you want to learn Ballet, Jazz, Lyrical, Modern, Tap, Hip Hop, or Ballroom, this class will give you the foundation you’ll need to succeed. This foundational class focuses on basic ballet and jazz dance.

DA110 Social Dancing (ages 12-18) *

Teacher: Ellie Tauscher

Pre-Requisite: DA090

Dance with confidence as you learn the fun of Eastern European Folk Dance, English Country Dancing, American Rags, Contra Dancing, along with the joy of Israeli Worship Dance. Learn the fundamentals of footwork, balance, and style as this class explores solo dancing in a social way. Whether you’re going to a renaissance fair or a Journey opening night party, you’ll dance with confidence and maybe even get others to join in.

DR100 The Actor's Toolbox (ages 10-14) * CLASS IS FULL

Teacher: Paul Williams

Pre-Requisite: DR090

Building on skills introduced in DR090, this class will further develop the student’s vocal and physical skills—allowing them to present a clearly developed character’s emotional story to the audience. This is a recommended class before all the 200 level acting classes!

CI100TG Theater Games (Ages 9-11) *

Teacher: Abbie VanBoxtel

Pre-Requisite: DR090

Let’s Play! Theater Games can be really fun, and they teach you a lot about acting too! This class is specifically for younger actors and a beginning step to improvisation. We’ll learn the basics of improvisation, how to be a good scene partner, and how to build a character–all while playing your favorite theater games!

DR500 Journey Studio: Acting *

Teacher: Stephen Pick and Melissa Bareford

Pre-Requisite: By audition only

The Acting Studio (new for 22-23!) is an intensive course focused on the foundational craft of acting. This class will take the student beyond the surface challenges of memorizing lines and blocking, drilling down to the heart of the character. This class will feature physical work to create a character’s voice and movement, theory work in several different common acting approaches, and practical work with scenes and monologues—both contemporary and classic. DR090 Foundations of Drama A (ages 8-10) CLASS IS FULL

DR090 Foundations of Drama B (ages 11-18) CLASS IS FULL

Explore the building blocks of acting through creative movement, theater games, and more! You'll be able to use your whole body, voice & facial expressions to portray any character you choose!

V090 Foundations of Voice (ages 8-12)

Teacher: Micah McIlvain

Whether you sing in your church choir, along with Rock Band, or just in the shower, singing can be fun! Learn how to put those pipes to use with good technique and style. In this interactive class, students will learn the fundamental concepts and training of the voice, learn proper posture and breathing techniques, phrasing and how to stay on pitch. Students will develop the confidence they need to perform solos in showcase through an encouraging learning environment.

V205 Intermediate Voice: Characters (ages 9-12) *

Teacher: Jay Tatco-Nowak

Pre-Requisite: V090

Want to learn how to perform a specific character type? Then this is the class for you! The focus of this class will change from session to session. We will offer instruction to help master various vocal styling for character types, such as: Villiains, Ingenues, Romantic leads and various Stock Character types.

DR204A Death by Shakespeare (ages 12-18) *

Teacher: Shanae Tullis

Pre-Requisite: DR090

Have you ever wanted to play a character who reaches a dramatic end on stage? If so, Shakespeare is the way to go! Within Shakespeare"s works, death is a common theme. Whether by poison, shame, sword, pie, or a bear, the end is coming for many well known characters including Macbeth, Hamlet, King John, Julius Caesar and more! In this class we will dig into the plays, the characters, their stories, and how they meet their end. Then you will perform their demise! Will it be dramatic? Comedic? Fake? Melodramatic? Let's find out together!

CI200 Next Step Improv (Intermediate) (ages 12-18) * CLASS IS FULL

Teacher: Cole Peterson

Pre-Requisite: DR090, CI100 (can request a waiver for CI100)

Create drama, humor, and stories on the spot. This class will continue to emphasize the basic principles of improvisation learned in CI100 with more specificity and advanced theater games. Learn team-building skills that will strengthen your ability to play with your partners on stage.

MT500 Journey Studio: Musical Theater *

Teacher: Chelsea Pitel

Pre-Requisite: by audition only

The Journey Studio Musical Theater class is designed to challenge you in all areas of musical theater: singing, dancing, and acting. In this class, you will get more personalized instruction and material to help you develop into a triple-threat performer and prepare you for that musical theater grind.
