Classes

Journey Theater classes are a great way to introduce young people to different aspects of the theater arts, and help students gain confidence and develop performance skills.

In-Person Classes:  Mondays at Cascade Park Baptist Church, March 29 through May 24.  No class on April 5.  It is important that everyone follow these protocols to take care of each other and make sure this in person activity remains possible. Read the In-Person Class Protocols HERE.

Online Classes: See each class description below for the scheduled live stream class time. Classes may be a combination of live stream (via Zoom), prerecorded instruction and individual or small group instruction and feedback; at the discretion of the teacher.  

Online Class Setup Help

Here are a few things to be aware of:

1.) “090 Foundations of…” classes are our CORE CLASSES that serve as prerequisites for continuing on to other classes.

2.) Classes listed with a * have prerequisites.  Please read the class description for details before registering.

3.)  If you have a question as to whether you meet the prerequisites for a class you’d like to take, please email the Journey Registrar, Beth Maxwell.

4.) Classes fill quickly, and may fill before this page is updated. Remember to list your second choice class!

Fees and Payment Information

  • Early Registration: $240.00*
  • Standard Registration: $255.00*
  • Second Class Discount:  Students who enroll in a second class get the second registration for $120.00!  (Make sure you enter both as a first-choice class. Second choices are used in case the first choice is unavailable.)
  • *Additional fees: Some classes require additional fees or purchase of supplies (e.g. make-up kits or shoes).  See class description for details.
  • New Family Discount: Families enrolling a student for the first time are eligible for a discount for $25 off the total cost of registration. Enter the code FIRSTJOURNEY when registering online. This discount is given once per family.

DR090 Foundations of Drama (ages 8-18)

Teacher: Tom Losch

Class will be held Thursdays, 6:00 - 8:00 pm
April 1 - May 21

Explore the building blocks of acting through creative movement, theater games, and scene work. You’ll learn to use your whole body, voice & facial expressions to portray any character you choose!

V201 Voice: Sight Reading (ages 10-16) *

Teacher: Karina May

Pre-Requisite: V090 Foundations of Voice

Class will be held Tuesdays, 6:00 - 8:00 pm
March 30 - May 25

Have you always wondered what those dots and doodles on a sheet music page mean? Would you like to be better at singing parts and reading music at rehearsals/callbacks and in choirs? This class will focus on easy sight reading strategies, learning key signatures, and the different focuses of part/harmony and solo singing. At the end of the class we will perform an original a capella arrangement that the class helps to create. Come along and sing a song!

DR203B Accents - British Isles (ages 12-18) *

Teacher: Shanae Tullis

Pre-Requisite: DR090

Class will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7:30 - 8:30 pm
March 30 - May 27

Like Eliza Doolittle, it is important for all actors to “learn to speak proper.”Building on the basic skills of diction and projection learned in DR090 Foundations of Drama, actors will now learn the ins and outs of building a character through an accent or dialect. This class will teach the foundations of language, and help students with placement, resonance, and appropriate pronunciation of a Standard British & cockney accent. We will work on a third accent of the student's choosing - Irish, Scottish, or Yorkshire.

Class will be held Mondays 6:00 - 8:00 pm at Cascade Park Baptist Church

DA/V090 Foundations of Dance/Voice Combo (ages 10-18) CLASS FULL

Teacher: Annalisa Quarto

Class will be held Mondays 6:00 - 8:00 pm at Cascade Park Baptist Church

This class is specifically geared toward older students new to Journey who can take our Foundations requirements at a quicker pace and move on to more advanced classes sooner! You will get a solid foundation in the proper singing techniques and learn the basic dance steps needed to prepare you for a show and other dance classes like tap and jazz.

DA102 Dance: Tap (ages 8-12) * CLASS FULL

Teacher: Madeleine Townsend

Pre-Requisite: DA090 Foundations of Dance

Class will be held Mondays 6:00 - 8:00 pm at Cascade Park Baptist Church

From Broadway classics like "42nd Street" to modern works like "Bring in da Noise, Bring in a Funk," tap dancing has electrified the musical theater scene for decades. From the stage to the street, tap brings rhythm alive and infuses music into the heart of the performer and the audience. This class will focus on building the strength and muscle memory for the foundational steps and putting them into fun combination steps! Tap shoes are required.

DR100 Drama: The Actor's Toolbox (ages 8-14) * CLASS FULL

Teacher: Melissa Bareford

Pre-Requisite: DR090 Foundations of Drama

Class will be held Mondays 6:00 - 8:00 pm at Cascade Park Baptist Church

You’ve got the basics, now this class will build on skills introduced in DR090 by focusing on your vocal and physical skills (your most important acting tools!) allowing you to present a character’s clearly developed emotional story to the audience. You should take this class if you want to become a “master craftsman” of the actor’s tools.

DR205C Drama: Diving Deep Into Character Acting (ages 12-18) * CLASS FULL

Teacher: Jon Jacquet

Pre-Requisite: DR090 Foundations of Drama

Class will be held Mondays 6:00 - 8:00 pm at Cascade Park Baptist Church

Have you ever been cast in a show and were given a fun character but you didn’t know where to start? Maybe you know some funny voices but don't know what to do with them? Or maybe you just want to kick your character acting up a notch. Then this class is for you. We are going to be diving deep into characters— learning how to break down a character’s essence, learn what makes them tick, how they think, and how to better “become” that character. We will explore character through improv games and we will also be learning how to create a character bible. There will be a good amount of writing outside of class time. This is a great class for aspiring improvisers!

MT300 Advanced Musical Theater (ages 12-18) * CLASS FULL

Teacher: Chelsea Lapp

Pre-Requisite: DA090, DR090 and V090

Class will be held Mondays 6:00 - 8:00 pm at Cascade Park Baptist Church

Come hone your skills in this advanced class that will require you to sing, dance, and act your way through some of Broadway’s favorites. We will spend 8 weeks learning big production numbers, performing scenes, and even singing some group songs and/or duets. Tap back into your basic theater skills and then push yourself to the next level; no one said becoming a triple threat would be easy!
