Vancouver Classes

Journey Theater classes are a great way to introduce young people to different aspects of the theater arts, and help students gain confidence and develop performance skills.


A few things to be aware of

  1. “090 Foundations of…” classes are our CORE CLASSES that serve as prerequisites for continuing on to other classes.
  2. Classes listed with a * have prerequisites.  Please read the class description for details before registering.
  3. If you have a question as to whether you meet the prerequisites for a class you’d like to take, please email the Journey Office.
  4. Classes fill quickly, and may fill before this page is updated. Remember to list your second choice class!
  5. If the class you want to take is full, register for your second choice, and email office@journeytheater.org to be placed on the waiting list.
  6. Classes and teachers are subject to change, depending on enrollment and availability.
  7. Mask wearing will not be required as of March 12th, 2022.* Please continue to follow best practices for hand-washing and hygiene, and stay home if you have cold-like symptoms.

Fees and Payment Information

  • Early Registration: $260.00** when you register by Monday, August 22nd
  • Standard Registration: $275.00**
  • **Additional fees: Some classes require additional fees or purchase of supplies (e.g. make-up kits or shoes).  See class description for details.
  • New Family Discount: Families enrolling a student for the first time are eligible for a discount for $25 off the total cost of registration. Enter the code FIRSTJOURNEY when registering online. This discount is given once per family.

Monday Classes List - Fall - 2022

JT100 Journey Troupers (ages 6-7) CLASS IS FULL

Teacher: Fredia Thompson

Let your imagination take flight into the world of theater through song, music, and dance. The fun never stops in Troupers and includes theater basics while learning the foundations of performing in a safe, encouraging environment. Let your child take the spotlight! This age group is not eligible to audition for the session production.

DR090 Foundations of Drama (ages 8-11) CLASS IS FULL

Teacher: Cole Peterson

Explore the building blocks of acting through creative movement, theater games, and more! You’ll be able to use your whole body, voice & facial expressions to portray any character you choose!

DR090 Foundations of Drama (ages 12-18) CLASS IS FULL

Teacher: Jay Tatco-Nowak

Explore the building blocks of acting through creative movement, theater games, and more! You’ll be able to use your whole body, voice & facial expressions to portray any character you choose!

V090 Foundations of Voice (ages 8-18) CLASS IS FULL

Teacher: Rebecca Ramirez

Whether you sing in your church choir, along with Rock Band, or just in the shower, singing can be fun! Learn how to put those pipes to use with good technique and style. In this interactive class, students will learn the fundamental concepts and training of the voice, learn proper posture and breathing techniques, phrasing and how to stay on pitch. Students will develop the confidence they need to perform solos in showcase through an encouraging learning environment.

DR202 Monologues (ages 9-14) *

Teacher: Stephen Pick and Melissa Bareford

Pre-Requisite: DR090

It’s time to take the spotlight in your acting. Focus on portraying a believable, interesting character through a monologue. Learn to select and prepare pieces that are just right for your skills and talents. You’ll get the chance to perfect and polish both a dramatic & comedic monologue, as well as focusing on dramatic audition fundamentals.

MT100 Musical Theater (ages 12-18) *

Teacher: Annalise Southwood

Pre-Requisite: DR090, DA090, V090

It’s time to put it all together! Dancing, acting, and singing all work together to create the magical world of musical theater. Start the journey to becoming a triple threat by learning how to combine all the basic skills you learned in previous Core Classes into one show-stopping showcase!

V102 Duets and Harmonies (ages 9-18) * CLASS IS FULL

Teacher: Taylor Gonzaga

Pre-Requisite: V090

Harmonize together! This class breaks down the process of harmonizing with another vocalist or in a group. Learn blending, balance, character relationships in duets as well as how to maintain part independence in canons and partner songs. Grow in confidence of music theory and harmonic structure to create basic chords within a duet, trio or ensemble!

Journey Carolers (ages 10-18) * CLASS IS FULL

Teacher: Michael McCormic

Pre-Requisite: By Audition Only

Journey Carolers will rehearse during classes, as well as some additional dates, and then tour for the Christmas season. Learn More.

Journey Studio: Acting (ages 13-18) * CLASS IS FULL

Teacher: Stephen Pick and Melissa Bareford

Pre-Requisite: By Audition Only

The Acting Studio (new for 2022-2023!) is an intensive course focused on the foundational craft of acting. This class will take the student beyond the surface challenges of memorizing lines and blocking, drilling down to the heart of the character. This class will feature physical work to create a character’s voice and movement, theory work in several different common acting approaches, and practical work with scenes and monologues—both contemporary and classic. DA090 Foundations of Dance (ages 8-18) CLASS IS FULL

Teacher: Cassidy Watson

1, 2, 3, 4 – Let’s get up and rock the floor! 5, 6, 7, 8 – Point your toes and stand up straight! Step up to the basic techniques that will prepare you to take on any form of dance. Whether you want to learn Ballet, Jazz, Lyrical, Modern, Tap, Hip Hop, or Ballroom, this class will give you the foundation you’ll need to succeed. This foundational class focuses on basic ballet and jazz dance.

DR203 Accents and Dialects: UK (ages 9-18) * CLASS IS FULL

Teacher: Shanae Tullis

Pre-Requisite: DR090

Like Eliza Doolittle, it is important for all actors to “learn to speak proper.” Building on the basic skills of diction and projection learned in DR090 Foundations of Drama, actors will now learn the ins and outs of building a character through an accent or dialect. This course will teach the foundations of language, the International Phonetic Alphabet, and help students find vowel placement and appropriate pronunciation of a variety of accents that are most often used on the stage: Standard British, Cockney, Provincial Dialects, Irish, American Dialects, and more. CI100 Improv (ages 12-18) *

Teacher: Cole Peterson

Pre-Requisite: DR090

Create drama, humor and stories on the spot. This class will give you the basic principles of improvisation and give you the confidence to embrace everything that is thrown at you when you don’t have a script in your hands. Learn team building skills that will strengthen your ability to play with your partners on stage. In this class, which focuses on short-form improv, you will learn how to live “in the moment” and confidently say “Yes!” to anything.

Journey Studio: Musical Theater (ages 13-18) * CLASS IS FULL

Teacher: Chelsea Lapp

Pre-Requisite: By Audition Only

The Journey Studio Musical Theater class is designed to challenge you in all areas of musical theater: singing, dancing, and acting. In this class, you will get more personalized instruction and material to help you develop into a triple-threat performer and prepare you for that musical theater grind. If you participated in the Journey Studio Musical Theater program during our 2021-22 season, you are still eligible to audition!
