Vancouver Classes

Journey Theater classes are a great way to introduce young people to different aspects of the theater arts, and help students gain confidence and develop performance skills.

A few things to be aware of

  1. “090 Foundations of…” classes are our CORE CLASSES that serve as prerequisites for continuing on to other classes.
  2. Classes listed with a * have prerequisites.  Please read the class description for details before registering.
  3. If you have a question as to whether you meet the prerequisites for a class you’d like to take, please email the Journey Registrar, Beth Maxwell.
  4. Classes fill quickly, and may fill before this page is updated. Remember to list your second choice class!
  5. Classes and teachers are subject to change, depending on enrollment and availability.
  6. It is important that everyone follow our in person protocols to take care of each other and make sure this in-person activity remains possible.

Fees and Payment Information

  • Early Registration: $250.00* when you register by Monday, August 23rd
  • Standard Registration: $265.00*
  • *Additional fees: Some classes require additional fees or purchase of supplies (e.g. make-up kits or shoes).  See class description for details.
  • New Family Discount: Families enrolling a student for the first time are eligible for a discount for $25 off the total cost of registration. Enter the code FIRSTJOURNEY when registering online. This discount is given once per family.

Monday Classes List - Fall - 2021

DR090 Foundations of Drama (ages 8-12) CLASS IS FULL

Teacher:

Explore the building blocks of acting through creative movement, theater games, and scene work. You’ll learn to use your whole body, voice & facial expressions to portray any character you choose!

DR090 Foundations of Drama (ages 10-14) CLASS IS FULL

DA090 Foundations of Dance (ages 8-18) CLASS IS FULL

Teacher: Annalisa Quarto

You’ve got dancing fever! Master these basics and you’ll be ready for anything. Whether you want to learn Ballet, Jazz, Lyrical, Modern, Tap, Hip Hop, or Ballroom—this class will give you the foundation you’ll need to succeed. This foundational class focuses on basic ballet and jazz dance and is a required beginning for all our other dance classes.

V090 Foundations of Voice (ages 8-18) CLASS IS FULL

Teacher: Taylor Gonzaga

Whether you love to sing in your church choir, along with Rock Band, or just in the shower—singing can be fun! Learn how to put those pipes to use with good technique and style. In this interactive class, you will learn the fundamental concepts and training of the voice and gain the confidence you need to perform solos in showcase and shows. This class is the foundation of all our voice classes!

MT100 Musical Theater: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (ages 9-14) *

Teacher: Madeleine Townsend

Pre-Requisite: DR090, DA090 and V090

It’s time to put it all together! Dancing, acting, and singing all work together to create the magical world of musical theater. Start the journey to becoming a triple threat by learning how to combine all the basic skills you learned in previous core classes into one show-stopping showcase! You want to take this class to become a well-rounded musical theater performer.

DR300 Advanced Drama: Fight for It! (ages 12-18) *

Teacher: Melissa Bareford

Pre-Requisite: DR090

Memorable characters fight for what they want. An essential key to creating an authentic, engaging character on stage is isolating what the character wants, what's in their way, and how they fight to get it. Learn how to get to the heart of any role--comic or dramatic--and find the one thing worth fighting for. Students will choose the style of scripts we work on and present for showcase -- customized for the students enrolled in the class.

CI100 Beginning Improv (ages 12-18) * CLASS IS FULL

Teacher: Shanae Tullis

Pre-Requisite: DR090

Create drama, humor, and stories on the spot. This class will give you the basic principles of improvisation and give you the confidence to embrace everything that is thrown at you when you don’t have a script in your hands. Learn team-building skills that will strengthen your ability to play with your partners on stage. In this class, which focuses on short-form improv, you will learn how to live “in the moment” and confidently say “Yes!” to anything.

MT500 Journey Studio: Musical Theater (ages 13-18) *

Teacher: Chelsea Lapp

Pre-Requisite: by audition

Journey Studio is a new year-long program designed for students ages 13-18 who want more rigorous training in the theater arts. If you are considering pursuing theater as a career, or just want to push yourself to really grow in your skills and become a more well-rounded performer, then this program is for you. We’ll be kicking off Journey Studio with a Musical Theater class designed to challenge you in all areas of musical theater: singing, dancing and acting. In this class you will get more personalized instruction and material to help you develop into a triple threat performer and prepare you for that musical theater grind. Tuesday Classes List - Fall - 2021

JT100 Journey Troupers (ages 6-7)

Teacher: Kylie Burton

Let your imagination take flight into the world of theater through song, music, and dance. The fun never stops in Troupers and includes theater basics while learning the foundations of performing in a safe, encouraging environment. Let your child take the spotlight! This age group is not eligible to audition for the session production

DA090 Foundations of Dance (ages 8-18)

You’ve got dancing fever! Master these basics and you’ll be ready for anything. V105 Voice: Leading Roles (ages 11-18) *

Teacher: Taylor Gonzaga

Pre-Requisite: V090

Want to learn how to perform a specific character type? Then this is the class for you! The focus of this class will change from session to session. We will offer instruction to help master various vocal styling for character types, such as: Villains, Ingénues, Romantic leads as well as specialty characters like animals.

DA101 Musical Theater Dance (ages 9-14) *

Teacher: Chelsea Lapp

Pre-Requisite: DA090

Do you love the music from shows like Hamilton, Matilda, Newsies, and Aladdin?!? In this high-energy class we'll review and build upon the basics, sharpen skills, and learn new steps using music from the most popular musicals of the last 10 years. This class will help you feel prepared and capable for your next audition, callback or class.

SC204 Hollywood Swordfighting (ages 12-18) *

Teacher: David Bareford

Pre-Requisite: DR090

Arm yourself with the flashing blades and debonair style of the swashbuckling legends of Hollywood! Using fanciful techniques pulled from classic cinema, this class will teach you to fence with light swords in true heroic style, including dramatic, ground-covering footwork, impressive weapon flourishes, and even how to take on multiple opponents with poise, style, and devil-may-care nonchalance. Of course, the class also stresses the underlying principles of safety, illusion, and story that make any kind of stage combat effective, and emphasizes the perfect form that is the hallmark of the skilled hero.
