We were so excited to have Journey alum, Nicki (Roller) Higgins, visit the cast of Finding Nemo Jr. at a recent rehearsal! 
Nicki was a part of Journey from 2010 to 2016, and participated in over 20 shows. Some of her favorites included Irving Berlin’s White Christmas, The Wizard of Oz, and Singin’ in the Rain. Coming back to visit a new generation of Journey kids was an amazing treat!
During her time at rehearsal, Nicki got to answer questions and share her personal journey as someone living with a limb difference.
Nicki was born without a full right hand, a condition known as symbrachydactyly. She brought extra insight into the story of Finding Nemo, since she has a “lucky fin” herself! The cast asked her questions about how she lives day-to-day with one hand, what it was like growing up visibly different, disabilities, and how her hand impacted her time in theater. She shared stories from back in 2011 when she was in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and that she had to figure out how to do choreography with a long bamboo stick for “Me Ol’ Bamboo.”
Nicki shared insight into how the story of Finding Nemo resonated with her when she was little. Nicki and the students discussed how wonderful it is that we are each unique, and how they have the chance to celebrate that through their performances of this show. The students had great encouragements to share, reminding both Nicki and each other that things like a lucky fin are cool, and make us special. Many laughs and smiles were shared!
