My Journey Story – Grace Farrell

Grace as a star from The Adventures of Tom Sawyer

Understanding what it took to give a quality audition has always been a little confusing to me. I would spend weeks memorizing my song and singing in front of my parents, but never got the second callback. The nerves would get to me and the best version of myself didn’t come through. I felt comfortable on stage during the actual play, but that was mostly because I was out under the lights with other people.

In the summer of 2019 I decided to go to one of the pop-up audition prep classes. This class was a game changer. I gained confidence, learned the tricks to a good audition and learned to feel comfortable performing in front of other people. I was reassured about my song choice, but most of all I was reminded that the creative team and even the crowd is there to support me. They want each person to do their best and each person is celebrated after their audition.

I learned the value of eye contact, moving around and staying loose. We also were taught a callback dance to prepare if we did receive the much-desired callback. I was also inspired by seeing experienced actors coming to this class. Even though they had big parts in the past they came to improve their craft. It reminded me that no matter age or experience it is important to work at improving each practice and performance. I would highly recommend going to one of these courses. I know I will return when I need to prepare for a new role.
